sending unit question

i feel like a dummy but does anyone know if a stock sending unit from a 85 gmc k1500 5.7liter motor will work the the temp guage in a 82 camaro that is supposed to have a 305 in it?
had a 350 in it from a 82 chevy with a stock sending unit and the temp guage worked at least when my brother had it. now that i have my other motor in it the guage quit working.. so i put an aftermarket mech. guage in and it works.. i changed the electric sending unit 2x and it didnt make a difference on the guage.. is the guage bad or do i need to get the stock 305 sending unit for my year or just get another guage? id leave the mech. guage in but i hate the way it looks.. i prefer a somewhat stock interior.
