Gauge turning too far, and solving circulation issue

1st question: My temp gauge works properly, however when engine starts after cranking, needle shoots clockwise, and gets stuck on gauge metal. Requires pulling covers off cluster to reset it with finger. PO had a piece of electrical tape that prevented this. Matter of fact, didn't even know it did this until I removed tape. What would cause this? I'm assuming I don't have the normal wiring woes since it works correctly except at engine start.

2nd question: Blew a heater core. After replacing it, and refilling rad with coolant, I noticed that nothing happened when engine turned on. With engine running, coolant slowly spills out of radiator, instead of sucking into engine.

Current engine problems are keeping me from running car till it warms up, so pulled small heater hose from water pump, and cranked engine to see if anything came out (wondering if pump is bad). Nothing came out when engine turned on. Turned motor off, and took off rad cap, and fluid comes squirting out of heater port on pump.

Can't afford to ***** nilly replace parts, need to find problem, and replace just that. Any suggestions?

The best way to fix that is to reposition the needle stop at a square angle thereby preventing the needle lodging.

However if you believe you might cause damage in the attempt, you can modify, and improve the test circuit.

You can disconnect the self-test leg of the wiring at the ignition switch connector.

It will be
two dark green wires.

You’ll know you disconnected the correct wires when the needle does not move when you start the engine.

Connect the
two dark green wires to each other.

To get back the self-test feature connect a 55Ω resistor, or closest value you can find, from ground thru a S.P.S.T. switch.

Use at least a 2 watt resistor.

Have the other end of the switch go to the splice in the
two dark green wires.

Now when you want to make sure the meter is working properly just hit the switch.

The meter should go to 260°, and not peg.

Happy Racing!
