Hi all.

Ok, I have currently a switch wired (via a relay) to turn on/off the dual fans. Radiator has been upgraded on my T/A '84.

Thing is I don't want them on all the time and only when required. This is the bit that I'm not sure on how to do.

Obviously I need a sensor (essentially to replace the switch) to detect temp and activate fans, but how do I wire this in and where should it be?
Would prefer not to use those probe things that go into the radiator pipes.

It depends on which T-stat your using as to which in the head temp switch you want.

 

All you need to do is go to summit or jegs (or the retailer of your choice) and get a temp switch. it screws into the side of the head. there are diff temp ratings so pay attention. some come on at 190 some come on at 200 etc... Now the wiring for it is simple. Basically if you have a relay in the system then youre 90 % done. The temp switch is technically just an activated ground. so your ground for the fan system that you currently have just gets disconnected and reconnected to the wire for the temp switch. Viola! done... its really simple....

i've been running one of this and a 40 amp relay with a 2 row radiator and a thuderbird fan for over a year now and was running 2 on my 04 Ram to control a dual speed thunderbird fan they work great you can adjust to any temperature

 

Hi all. Just got round to looking at this again. Why does the Autozone page tell me that the SW555 is not suitable for my engine?
It looks like it should be SW500. the pigtail looks right though, PT770.

Because it is not the correct switch for your engine. It comes on at a lower temp than the sw500 and is a bit more preferable. They interchange physically.

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life, but what thermostat should I use with the SW555 switch?
Can this be installed in the thermostat housing, or should it really be installed in the head?
Same with the temperature gauge sensor.... Should this be in the head not on the thermostat housing?

I meant to say where should the SW555 switch go?

Is this really the right one anyway? From what I have been reading, one that comes on at a lower temp seems to be more preferable.

I put mine in the head, you can get a lower one if you want but factory is 220-230 so the sw555 comes on much lower.

 

Hmmmm.... As I wont be driving the car much in winter over here, in summer it's not uncommon for us to have weeks where we have 36c (97f) plus temperatures everyday, I'm thinking one that comes on at a lower temp, combined with a lower thermostat (say 160f thermostat, with a 175f switch), might be better suited.

A 180* stat seems to be popular.Thats what I run with a adjustable switch set to come on at 170*.With the new radiator and fan the car actually stays in the 180* 190* range. Even in traffic.I also have a engine oil cooler installed that only allows the oil to flow through it at 180*(using a sandwich adapter thermostat).One of the reason for the 180*stat and 180* cooler is because you want the oil to reach a decent operating temp.

 

With a 180f thermo. Wouldn't you set the fan switch to come on higher? Say 190 or something?

 

I also have a 6"x17" extra transmission oil cooler that runs constant and I like the idea of the fan keeping it at the lower temp.My fan set up is probably a little different than most . I use a 16" front pusher fan that is set directly in the middle of the radiator as my primary fan switched on at 170*.Then I have two large oil coolers mounted side by side in the center on the engine side with a 12" puller fan mounted over them set at 200*as a back up fan.
Some of this set up is new to me because I made some adjustments with a new primary fan controller when I did the new radiator install about two months ago.
So far I'm more than happy with it.

 

Ok, I'm having some issue with my temps.

driving the car is fine, fast, slow doesn't really matter. But at idle the temp steadily rises to around 200, then the fan kicks on and it steadies out around 220 at idle.

The fan is wired into the thermostat housing.

I will get some pics of the mess I have later.

Seems fairly normal to me

 

That's the factory operating temps for our cars. It's also known that our factory gauges are notoriously unreliable. Mine reads 20* to hot, compared to the temp at the thermostat housing when taken by an IR gun. I'm currently runnin a 180 T-stat and Jet Fan switch, comes on 195, off at 185.

 

My factory gauge is bad. Using an aftermarket gauge and IR gun I have learned just how bad.

At true 180F the factory gauge is 220 at 210F the factory gauge is 260+
