Can I Use A Clockwise Flow Water Pump?

Ok, so I took a break from my T/A and bought a buddies unfinished blazer project. It has a 86-92 camaro 5.0. I want to run dual alts so I have a passenger side mount alt and a bracket for PS and an alt from a 4.3 liter. I bought the water pump for the camaro but its a counterclockwise but I thought about it and I know it wont flow correctly. A clockwise water pump would work with how my belt system is set up (so my PS and alts spin corretly) but will the clockwise flow the water correctly thru the block and to the radiator?

Not sure how you're going to make the WP spin CCW in that setup...

If the back of the belt (smooth side) goes over the WP pulley, it will turn CCW. If the front of the belt (ribbed side) goes over the WP, the pump will turn CW.

The block couldn't care less which way the impeller happens to spin, as long as cooled water is drawn into it up out of the bottom rad hose, and forced out of the "legs" of the pump and into the front of the block. In fact the casting of the pump is the same regardless of rotation; all that changes to make the "backwards rotation" pump, is the impeller blades.

Im kinda even more lost now lol. I know it only spins clockwise right now cause of the way the belt goes over around the WP but if I put in a clockwise water pump then the belt would spin the WP blades the correct way to flow water thru the block into the radiator and back up, correct?

If you change the direction of the waterpump you have to use the other side of the belt.

Which side of the belt runs over the WP?

Real simple, like I posted above. Also real simple to understand if you think of the WP as a "black box", where it doesn't matter what's inside the box, as long as it has "suck" on the rad hose fitting and "blow" on the legs.

All you have to do is make sure the impeller matches the direction the pump spins. That's it. Don't let it outsmart you. That said, I have never in all my days seen a "serpentine" (snake-like) system that spins the WP CW. In the system that was used for only a couple of years around 87-88 that has one flat ribbed belt, of the same belt style as "serpentine" setups but not actually a "serpentine" setup itself, yes; but in one where the one belt winds its way like a snake among all the accessories, no. And in the system in the pic, the back (flat) side of the belt needs to be on the WP, like every other setup using that accessory drive system, since the WP pulley is flat.

Also, don't bet on your hood being able to close with that truck system in the pic, with it holding that driver's side alternator up in the outer ozone layer the way it does. More than likely you'll need to ditch all that stuff and put a car setup on it instead, and either ditch the 69-87 pass side alt and brackets or ditch the driver's side alt altogether. Or both.

Re: Can I Use A Clockwise Flow Water Pump?

Have a custom cowl hood being made to clear the alt bracket on the driver side. Took me awhile to line up the alt pulley on the passenger side. The flat side of the belt does go against the WP pulley and spins in a counter clockwise rotation. The alts can run any direction (I have a local building me high output alts) THe first WP I tried was a counter and it wouldnt push water thru the the upper radiator hose. I took off the upper hose and pulled it to the side to see if it would flow any water and it didnt. It would push water out of the water neck on the manifold. I just swapped WP to a clockwise and it actually forced a lil water out (VERY LITTLE, DROPS) So I am not sure whats going on :-(

you're gonna need a reverse rotation water pump.. which you have now.. but then you'll have to figure out how to mount the alternator bracket since the reverse rotation pumps don't have the mounting boss for that bracket.. probably be easier, cheaper, and better to just run one big alternator using a complete stock bracket setup and matching water pump and pulleys. those guys at GM that engineered this stuff knew what they were doing.
