Re: running hot

The fan switch operates in the mid 230s somewhere. Comes on at around 235° (horribly imprecise so it's not material whether you call it 234°, 235°, 238°, or whatever); shuts off at around 215. One of these cars in proper UN-HACKED working condition will sit there and do that all day long, until it runs out of gas. Up to 23x°, fan comes on, down to 21x°, fan goes off, up .... etc.
That means, it you think about it, that in the factory engineers' opinion, the engine DID NOT EVEN BEGIN TO NEED COOLING AT ALL until 23x°.
What gives people the idea that this is somehow "wrong"? It's the most amusing thing. These same people would have bought one of these cars at eh Chevy store in 198x and started complaining about "hot" THE VERY FIRST TIME THEY TURNED THE KEY, because they don't understand how cooling systems WORK in the first place.
So, aside from the temp reaching 230°, what makes you think your car is "running hot"?

Re: running hot
ok i guess it makes sense it use to run below 200 ? so when does secondary fan kick in ? the primary use to come on when i turned the key on then seconday kicked in at about 230 ? i guess it was out of wack then corrected itself ? the car mostly sat for about 4 or 5 years before i got it

Re: running hot
I can't speak for what it "used" to do; only, what THE PARTS the factory put in it are SUPPOSED TO do.
Secondary fan kicks on at around 235° ± 5° or so.
