Radiator ???'s

I have a 1988 IROC and was wondering will a 31"x19" Griffin radiator fit in the stock location or will it need some modifications to fit or what size Griffin or aftermarket aluminum radiator I will need?THANKS

Re: Radiator ???'s

I"m writing a post about me installing a Champion all aluminum radiator. Anything bigger than stock is going to require cutting the rubber isolators. How much depends on the radiator, but its not that bad.

Re: Radiator ???'s

There are rubber isolators under the factory radiator. The rubber isolators provide a mounting pad so you don't have metal to metal contact and provide a secure channel for the radiator to sit. The OEM one isn't flat at all it's more rounded.

I thought I had a write up somewhere on here but I can't find it. Here's the pics from my install on my cardomain page. I used the 1.25" tubes which are slightly larger than normal, but offer more cooling. At the time I think the radiator was around $160 to $180 from Summit.

I trimmed the rubber isolators and bent a new upper mount. The inner tube is there just in case the radiator wiggles at all so there isn't metal to metal contact on the side tanks or on the top to the new mount. I also made a new fan mount with a shroud built in. That allowed me force the 12" permacool fans to pull air directly through the radiator.

Also note there is no heater hose fitting like the OEM one. That is now hooked up to the intake and the other to waterpump on my install.

Re: Radiator ???'s

I liked the bike inner tube idea, but I guess I would be worried that the edges and the vibrations would eventually wear through the rubber. Its a bit thinner than the stock mounts.

I found that if I just cut them down with side cutters, it held my radiator quite well, no hammering in place or beating down. Just slid in where it needed to.

I still managed to use all my stock parts.

Mines 32" X 20" High.

But what matters is the width, mines 2" wide with a square bottom. The stock radiator is 1.75" and is rounded on the bottom. So unless you're new radiator is rounded bottom of a 1.75" width, then you're going to have to cut.

I'll have to measure mine. I think the 1.25" tubes was the thing that screwed me over on the stock mount. My rubber isolators are also notched but much more than that and it still stuck up 2 fin rows....
