AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

I installed a AC Bypass pulley last week and today noticed that the belt is starting to fray. The new pulley has the belt snug to the walls and the walls have no beveled edges. The walls of the pulley are straight.
Has anyone else had this problem.
Heres were I bought it= http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...&keyword=34157
And you can see the fray just on top of the water pump.

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

I bought one for my lt1 and had to put washers on it to align right it, was squealing like a pig and doing what yours is. Did you buy the ac delete pulley from autozone? If so i would buy the ac 1le version from gm.

Your power steering pump also seams to be leaking.

I found it at Pace Performance but is says =
Description=
This Assembly was originally used on 93-95 1LE cars without a/c This part will take the place of the original a/c compressor, if you wish to eliminate the a/c from your car. This bracket will only work with bracketry from 1993-1997 Camaro/Firebird, Caprice/Roadmaster. Original belt remains the same.
Its been discontinued/not available.

Then again maybe it's not the pulley, what if it's something else? if you already have a good ac delete pulley then you need to look hard and figure it out. A post on the internet will only get you so far.

that's a cheap junk one you have on it now. you can't put washers on it like i did mine to fix the problem, what happens with these junk ebay parts is there off about a couple washers and it eats the belt and starts squealing the belt. At least that's what mine did and i could see the alignment twisted, i was lucky not to throw a belt on them wot passes and bust my rad to hell. Opti would have got soaked and i would have been ****ed!

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

I can see on the tension pulley a mark around it where the belt used to be. The new pulley has moved it towards the inside 1/16 in.
That seems to be enough to rub the belt as it moves around the AC Bypass pulley.

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

It's a simple setup, a bohrough the pulley with a bearing. Easily shimmed up. There must be some tolerance issues with the casting. I would just take out the bolt and shim the pulley out.

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

I just thought I would post a photo of the belt on the bypass pulley and where the belt is riding on the tension pulley and you can see how the belt on the smog pump is against the inside of the pulley.
So am I over reacting to this.

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

.
Honestly the more I look at that bypass pulley I’m finding that I defiantly don't like the way it looks, it’s "out of place”. At least the compressor looks like it belongs there. I removed most of the AC plumbing but
I installed the AC Compressor again until I find a replacement. I would actually like to keep it on for awhile. Heres a photo with the compressor.Much better than that pulley.

Your belt is too stretched out ! Look at your wear indicator

also note:
in the other pic your belt should go.

off the smog pump under crank...buck up over water pump then under power steering.up over alt...

it will shorten that belt up about 2 to 3 inchs also. making it fit better.

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

I've done a lot of these serpentine conversions over the years and one thing to pay attention to is the machined seam split on the GM power steering pulley. If it is seperating even a tiny bit, it can shed away at the outside edge of the belt.....front or back or sometimes both. I've had to hand file the sharp corners to prevent it from continuing. And yes, you are missing the rear bearing thrust washer on your delete pulley. Nice to see you are still running the guided idler pulley still.....parts store don't carry that version and GM wants to sell you the whole bracket with tensioner in order to get one.

Re: AC Bypass pulley = Damaged belt

ArcticwhiteZ is correct on the belt routing too....the belt should make an "S" route with respects to the crank and water pump while going under and up the ps pulley.....which would have the belt contacting about half of the ps pulley rib diameter.
