Cooling fan not turning on again.

Hi Everyone,

I bought my 1992 Camaro RS new in 92. The cooling fan switch has been replaced ( no lie ) about 4 or 5 times. And guess what, its that time AGAIN.
relay, always seemed to be ok, cause when you turn on the a/c the fan turns on. When you slide to off position, fan turns off. Had it replaced about 4 years ago, and it works great for a while. Turns on about 230 degrees and off at like 210, 220. is this normal for these cars? any suggestions/solutions?
Could a bad coolant temp sensor be part of this dilemma?

any help would be appreciated thx to all and have a good weekend.

car has a 305 tbi btw

This may not answer all of your questions, but I found it an excellent primer on how these systems work. If you have not read it, it's worth your time IMO.

Re: Cooling fan not turning on again.

boeingcorp,

Read your post and decided to tag along and hope to get an answer...

I know the basic operation of the fan is coordinated with the temperature of the engine or the operation of the AC. Mine works when the AC is switched on but I'm not sure about it working on it's own automatically.

Gave it a try the other day but as the temp gauge started climbing I go a bit nervous and just switched on the AC to kick in the fan. Temperature went down and everything looked good. No coolant leaks or other apparent issues. I got under the car, disconnected the lead to the sensor and grounded it directly to the frame. The fan did indeed kick on as it was supposed to... So I know everything works... Will try again next week to run it up to operating temperature and see if it works automatically...

As I'm in the middle of restoring my 92 RS T-Top T5 & 305 w/tbi and thought I would take care of some of these small issues before they became a problem. Any recommendations for a replacement Cooling Fan Switch (Single 18" Fan). I was looking at the Autozone parts... Duralast and Santech ate the two that appear to be most reasonable. This is really a pain to change so I'd like to do it only once if possible. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks...
Ron
