Cooling Fan Wiring Help
Cooling Fan Wiring Help
Alright I have a head scratcher. I am working on an 86 camaro with a 305 TPI. When I got the car the front was crunched and since I had the replacement parts I went for it. I now have everything back together and I am trying to get the cooling fans working. From what I found on here this car should only have one cooling fan but it has 2. I am not sure if this was a mod or if it came factory this way. Either way I figured out the passenger side fan with help from here but I am stumped on the drivers side fan.
There are currently 2 relays that control the fans and both are mounted on the radiator support. The passenger side fan is controlled by a temp switch between cylinders 6 and 8. All seems well with this one. The part that has me baffled on the drivers side fan is that when I test the leads to the fan motor it has 4 volts between the terminals. When I unplug the second relay the power goes away and I still have not figured out how to get 12 volts to the fan. Seems like something is shorted but after going through the first wire harness I found nothing to fix this. Also when I check out schematics they do not help because this car should not have 2 fans.
In addition I have a code 33 on the ecm so I am not sure if the 2 are related. Any help in troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cooling Fan Wiring Help
I wonder if they are RamCharger style dodge dual fans? I build them for a lot of GM applications since they fit a lot of 31x19 radiators very well. Post a pic up of what you're dealing with.

Below is a picture of the fans. There are 2 relays. Both are mounted to the side of the radiator support on the battery side.

Re: Cooling Fan Wiring Help
Those look like the OE fans. The passenger side fan should run off the fan switch between cylinder 6 and 8 and, the other won't turn on until the car gets hot. that's when you should see the voltage at the relay.
