fan nightmare

Hi everyone
i have a 1985 z28 camaro, with a fan switch issue, the switch gets blistering hot after only about 5 minutes runing.
i checked the grounds, all the wires witch is only the ground, power ,and accesory, all are not damaged.yet it still gets hot.
any suggestons?
could it be my fan is on its way out?

and i was also wondering what size fuse the factory would have used for the fan, because i have a 25 amp fuse and it dosent blow it but like i said the switch gets way to hot.

Re: fan nightmare

The fan switch is mounted in the pass side head.

How do you know it gets unusually hot?

isn't the 85 single fan system controlled by the ECM? I don't think they have a fan switch stock. BUT after 16 mooseheads ,I could be wrong

Re: fan nightmare

Yea there is not a fan switch for the 85's, factory that is. Take a picture of what youre talking about. There should be two wires off the single fan. One is ground and one is to the fan relay. The relay leads to the ecm.

Re: fan nightmare

After being here for 8 years I have heard what seems to be a "thousand" complaints about the switch in the head and or car running to hot = stock thermostat + head fan switch/ECM controlled being set high.

Here's an option to remedy that/those

I also have simple circuits for larger/higher amp fans that are totally independent of any other wiring including the stock.

That's how mine are set up.

I want to say all single fan systems use the fan switch in the head and only the dual fan set ups use the ECM cooling feature.

Re: fan nightmare

Could 1985chevydude be talking about a " manual switch" he has mounted in the car for activating the fan/fans and not the switch on the head?

nah ,you got it back wards.the dual fan set up uses the switch in the right head. the previous single fan is controlled by the ECM thru the fan relay

My 84 single fan doesn't use the ECM at all, only the fan switch in the head to control the fan.

It sounds like you’re talking about a driver controlled switch, not any one that might have been mounted in the engine.

Even if an aftermarket switch was retrofitted to the engine, the switch still needs to power a relay, not the fan directly.

Happy Racing !
