Oil Cooler

I got an oil cooler with my '87 350 block I picked up. After rebuilding it I went to prime the engine but oil came out of the oil cooler, it was my understanding that coolant was what ran through the cooler since it comes off the radiator.

My question is, did I install this incorrectly or if it is suppose to run oil to the radiator, does the radiator have separate cells for oil (i don't want my oil and coolant mixing of course) or does this one need to run to some separate heat exchanger? Thanks

Re: Oil Cooler

There shouldn't be oil coming out of the oil cooler hose fittings. Only coolant circulates through the cooler.

Re: Oil Cooler

You can only install those things one way. If oil is coming out of the hose fittings in the front, it is cracked and should not be used (unless you want you oil to be chocolate milk). If it is coming out over the top, bad gasket.

Re: Oil Cooler

Is it a factory style Modine heat exchanger? Or an aftermarket oil cooler?

Read this...

The factory unit passed coolant to exchange heat (whether warming or cooling the oil). While an aftermarket unit, such as this one from Summit, redirects the oil to a mini-radiator unit to exchange heat with air.

Re: Oil Cooler

I had assumed it was stock but it looks a bit different from the ones shown in those pictures. Same basic design but the oil lines screwed into holes rather than a hose clamped on.

Looks like I will just have to get an adapter and have no oil cooler, thanks guys

Re: Oil Cooler

that style of cooler was used on cop cars and trucks with H/D cooling-I use that style on my Camaro with a separate oil cooler radiator(whole setup taken from '83 cop impala)You could use that oil cooler adaptor to install oil cooler later-though as made by GM,some of the oil passages can benefit from a little "porting"to reduce oil flow restrictions present in as-cast form

Remove the adapter (between the block and filter).
Connect the two heater lines where you disconnect the hoses to the heat exchanger (at the passenger frame rail). Or, since you are racing, remove all heater hoses and plug the openings.
