Best engine oil and PS coolers?
Best engine oil and PS coolers?
I'm going to be doing AutoX and road racing so I'm looking to install the best engine oil cooler and power steering cooler I can.
What are everyone's suggestions for coolers, mounting locations, and fittings? I'll need everything from scratch. Perhaps there are even race units with fans on them?
Location wise I'll be limited because I'll have dual 3-core intercoolers in the front, one on each side of my radiator.
Oh, also I currently have a Tru-Cool 18,000 GVW trans cooler for my 4L60 and 12" 2400RPM stall converter. How much bigger should I go on that?
Thanks! Alex

I have a B&M Stacked style cooler, mounted in front of my radiator.
Re: Best engine oil and PS coolers?
Is the general consensus that the stacked plate style is the best? I know there are different type so that was one of my other questions.
What is the heat dissipation rating of yours? Do you have no AC condenser in front of your radiator? Do you have a temp sensor so you know what the before and after temps were? Are you not worried about the heat from your radiator when you are stopped will be raising the fluid temp of the other cooler because of the close location (heat soak)?

I have an AC condenser. I have my supercooler mounted in front of it, behind the X-brace. I used some 3/8" fuel line, cut open and placed over the brace to protect the cooler.
The cooler I have is:
B&M Super Cooler 70268
It's rated to 13000btu. I'm not terribly worried because the transmission fluid comes out of the radiator, into the super cooler, back to the transmission. I'm using it to cool the fluid down further. My only gripe is I wish I had known about the ones with the NPT fittings sooner. Then I could run braided line with -an fittings to it instead of the rubber hoses.
I'm running a dual fan set up and haven't experienced any issues with heat-soak, though I haven't run it in super hot temps yet either as I installed it this past fall. Also, I do not have any temp readings of before-after.
Here is another link that you may find useful.

Hope this helps!

Re: Best engine oil and PS coolers?
I'd like to add the single best improvement for the trans fluid is to use a quality full synthetic. 180 degrees is the optimum temp range for the fluid-too cool is not good and obviously running it excessively hot is bad also.
I used a Perma Cool trans cooler which was a tube/fin style and it had AN fittings on it. Line pressure is critical to good, firm shifts so I used fittings to adapt to hardline and used 5/16" brakeline from the cooler to the trans and bent/flared my own lines.
I used the primary cooling fan assembly from an 89-93 style Talon/Eclipse since its a 9" fan which is rated @ 2100 CFM which is a pretty high rating for as small as it is-draws 16A on high speed and I used a separate 185/175 temp switch mounted in a remote filter block which was grounded to frame and engine-this kicked on the trans cooler fan to stabilize trans temps between 185 and 175. The Talon fan mounted really clean onto the Perma Cool cooler. And, by using a remote filter block (it used a PH8A or equivalent filter) I not only added better filtering but also picked up more fluid capacity. Combined with a TCI 2-extra quart deep pan, a standard filter change gave me about 3.5 more quarts of fluid-its a sneaky way of keeping the trans fluid cool-just add more capacity to the system.
