HELP! Won't start when hot.
Please help. When I drive my 87 Camaro v6 it runs hot (to me) around 220 degrees on the gauge. When I am out somewhere the car won't start until I open the hood and let it cool off for several minutes. The battery is supposed to be good but it won't even click. Is there a safety switch or something the keeps it from turning over? What can I do about this problem. Thanks

Re: HELP! Won't start when hot.
from what i hear on this forum,220 is very normal for the later third gens-nothing wrong there
the only safety switch is the neutral switch on the shifter-hot no crank problem likely a bad starter or a loose connection or other wiring fault.

220 is normal, seems like a starter solenoid issue.

Re: HELP! Won't start when hot.
Thanks, I recently replaced the solenoid about the time this started happening. I might have to again I guess. It only does it when hot.
I do have some electrical gremlins also in the dash board. Oil gauge doesn't work (replaced with aftermarket part), Gas only shows 1/4 when full, so the temperature may be wrong. Seems higher than it should before and during having this problem, after it cools and starts the temp goes all the way down to cold even though it is still very warm, and then it won't start again until it cools again.

It’s a common problem in these cars.
The cure is to replace the starter circuit wiring with heavier gage.
You don’t have to replace the main battery cable, just the wiring from the key to the solenoid.
