Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

Ok... I see a few people stating they have had to replace their Champion 2/3 core aluminum radiator... But I'm not sure what percentage of people...

So, are you running your original? If yes, how long?
Or have you had to replace yours, how many times, after how long?

Though the benefits of better cooling are alluring, having it break / ship / install repeatedly, is not... I'm leaning towards getting a better quality one down the road...

So maybe get an idea of how many are still running their first Champion...
Thanks...

Subscribing - I need a radiator as well and not sure what to buy. I don't want to blow $500 on a radiator. There's got to be a good one for $250 or so somewhere.

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

Installed it 2 years ago. Ran great. Cooled it down pretty fast. Sprung a leak @ where the core meet the end tank. Warrantied it, 3 radiators and 4 weeks later, they still couldnt reproduce one that was the proper dimensions to fit like the first one. Went out and bought a 2 core becool. IMO i think 3 cores work better with a stock water pump/tstat

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

Exactly why I didn't get one.. a few too many reports of stuff like that and my stock one is still going strong... why pay to break it?

aiarchon, which model # BeCool did you get, they make 2 sizes for our cars, the smaller one? How was the fit?

Thanks,

Rafael

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

Had one in the car. It actually ran hotter than the stock radiator. Pulled it out and had a custom Ron Davis Racing radiator/shroud/fan combination made for the car. Now it runs cooler like it should. After removal I cut the Champion tanks off and found at least half the coolant tubes were pressed closed on one end or the other. Probably didn't cool well because there wasn't enough flow due to horrifyingly bad construction.

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

Yeah, that's what I found, a crap shoot... some people had good luck, some didn't... again, mine is working fine with the stock one... so when it's time, I'll upgrade to something better than Champion...

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

The be cool radiator is physically smaller. Theres two tabs on the top which make shure it fits in the saddle snug. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/bci-60015

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

The only thing that pissed me off about this radiator, is after spending over $500 on it, i had to buy the heater line fitting. I called summit up and asked where it was, they said it was "Optional" (Which i think is rediculous)and was like another 30 bucks and i said really? **** this thing then, send me return shipping label ill buy a more affordable one - they sent me the fitting at no charge.

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

at least it fits with no other modifications to the car. The 62015 is a tad bit bigger and require some modification like the champion.

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

I will say. (and it could have happened with the champion - I dont remember) But with the BeCool, it seems if im cruising the strip making a bunch of noise(2500RPM) it gets toasty. I think my next investment will be in a high volume water pump and high flow fan. The one 90* day I cruised the beach she ran 210 with the fans on. Didnt overheat, but warmer than i wanted it after spending $500. I think the cores are too big for a street application, so it doesnt spend as much time in the radiator cooling down low. Im also running stock Dual fans, which i think might be a problem also

Did you tune the fan temps?

Re: Champion Radiator... Has it broken / lasted?

Fan temp setting is controlled by megasquirt 2 VIA the ECT sensor located next to/under the thermostat. Was set at 185* during the summer.

Replaced mine after a few months use when it sprung a leak on the passenger side tank header. American Eagle Radiator. The new one didn't fit as well, but looks better and hopefully it holds up better too.

When talking to LedFootRacing they informed me the Champion Radiators have loss their quality and recommended this new American Eagle Radiator, to which, I was already going to try. We'll see how she holds up and I will let you guys know if anything ever arises.
