91 RS 305 TBI Radiator fan not working
91 RS 305 TBI Radiator fan not working
Hello all, I have a 91 RS that seems to have a cooling problem. The SINGLE fan doesn't seem to come on, even when I use the A/C. Im very new to cars, especially these cars so any tips or problem solving would help. The car is fine as long as im moving, but once i start to sit it goes well past the 220 into the red zone near 260. Any pictures with your advice would also be helpful, so I know exactly where to look. The only thing I've done is put a new fan motor in, but that didn't help it. I don't know where the fuses or relays are, and couldn't really find much online that I could understand. Again, any help is appreciated.

Has it been working since you've owned it, and just recently stopped? I was going to guess fan switch, but it would still go on with AC on if the relay is OK. It's on the firewall right in front of the driver . Think it's the one closest to the side of the car. Should have four wires going to it.

Yeah I haven't owned the car very long, but it had always worked until about 4 days ago, and I looked at where the relays are, one of them looks new, the other has some sort of paperclip or something in it, not sure if this is the correct one since there are two that look the same, but they aren't bolted to the car just sitting there. Could the paperclip thing be my problem? and whats the other relay for?

Well, lots of people rig the fans to be on all the time because of fan switch problems, and it's hard to say what's up with yours. I think the other relay is for the fuel pump. One relay has five wires going to it, the other four. The fan relay is the one with four. Is the wiring intact to the plug on the bottom of the relay? And if you unplug the relay how do the contacts look?. The two relays used to be behind a little bracket on the firewall. That they are not may mean something has been altered, hard to say. What is supposed to happen is the fan switch on the passenger side head grounds the little green with white stripe wire going to the relay providing a ground to actuate the relay. There is another small wire, I think tan that provides 12 volts with the key on. The relay takes the positive feed coming in to it and sends the 12 volts back down the Black with red stripe wire to run the fan. The positive lead comes from the power block near the battery where several things are connected to 12 volts. Check for good clean connections all around. That's the cause for most electrical problems- bad connections

Ok, so i looked and the relay is fine, but the wires coming out by the battery, something doesn't look right. There is a little red wire with a little black box, and I can see where there was wire coming out the other side but it seems to have broken off, what is the little black box and how can I fix this? And is this even my problem? Its right over by the battery and I assume it was attached to the small box where all the other wires are attached. Thanks for the reply

It sounds like you are describing the fusible link (acts like a fuse) that is on the wire that supplies 12 volts to the relay for the fan. Is the black box kind of cylindrical in shape? If the wire coming out the other end has broken off you have found the problem.. Splice in a good one and you should be good to go. Is the broken off end to the red wire nearby?
