AC Compressor knock

I just took the Smog pump out of my 89 GTA (TPI 350), car runs perfectly fine aside from when the AC is on, the compressor makes a knocking sound. I would assume it is a bearing inside the compressor itself? Could i just pull the clutch off and replace it?

Who’s There ?

Depending on the former belt routing the A.I.R. pump acted as a vibration damper.

You want to check the bearings before assuming they’re bad.

The clutch bearing is near the clutch assembly and the rotor bearing is inside the compressor, however the clutch bearing is the more likely suspect.

If either of these is worn they can be replaced however the compressor is probably many years old at this point and won’t be long before you have to rebuild or replace the entire unit.

Can’t think of anything besides a worn clutch bearing or loose hardware.

But you probably have made sure there are no loose mounting bolts, etc.
