Dual LS1 Fan issue: 1 EBL ECM Fan / 1 Head temp. / EBL
Hi all,
Recently, I've been having an overheating issue in stop/go traffic. The temps start to creep up slowly and eventually I'll end up in the red zone (on the stock temp guage)
I never have any issues when driving on the freeway. I suspect it's related to my fan setup:
Here are my questions:
Recently, I've been having an overheating issue in stop/go traffic. The temps start to creep up slowly and eventually I'll end up in the red zone (on the stock temp guage)
I never have any issues when driving on the freeway. I suspect it's related to my fan setup:
- I have the dual LS1 fans.
- What I know at a high-level view:
- 1st fan is triggered via my EBL ECM (or at least it's supposed to be)
- 2nd fan is triggered via the head temp switch (or at least it's supposed to be)
- I suspect one or both are not working when they should.
- When I turn on my A/C, my driver side fan turns on, however, the "Fan" box in EBL WUD does not turn on.
- What I don't know at a more detailed level:
- One of my fans is connected to a relay that I wired a few years ago.
- I have no clue how or why I wired it this way but I'm pretty sure I followed some sort of wiring diagram/tutorial
- I believe this relay is triggered via my EBL ECM but haven't traced my wiring just yet to make sure.
- Last night I found that the A/C switch would trigger one of the fans.
- I took the car out for a drive and let it get to the middle of temp guage.
- As soon as the middle was reached I turned on the A/C.
- Temps began to decrease to normal.
- This is why I suspect a fan malfunction.
Here are my questions:
- Is there anyway to force enable the (supposed) EBL controlled fan by changing a parameter/value?
- I wanted to try this to test the EBL controlled fan.
- What would be the best way to test the non-EBL controlled fan?
- I've already checked that my head temp fan switch is connected and in tact.
- I was going to swap the connectors on each fan to test each via the A/C trigger but found I would need to get under the car and it was getting late.

For the fan controlled by the switch, you can just ground that wire, since that is what the switch does.
Both fans should be wired through a relay though, so if they're not, you should add them

AC could engage both fans.
Have you run 12v power directly to both fans to make sure they work? I know you said one works so just the other would be needed I guess. This will eliminate the fan motor being an issue anyway.

Hi all,
Ended up fixing this.
Each fan had it's own reason why it was not engaging:
1st fan (EBL controlled) was not tuning on because I wired the IGN to a dual fuse holder for my radio (http://a.co/bLOmzww) and had removed one of the fuses which I forgot to put back. Once I replaced the fuse then it started to work.
2nd fan (Head Fan temp. switch controlled) was not turning on simply because my fan switch was toast. I replaced it with the 87 regal one that turns on at about 212F.
Now they both work when they should
Thanks for all the replies everyone!
