Air Deflector Vs. Air Dam

Hi All, I have an 86 Trans am with what Hawks refers to as a front Lower Deflector. My front Lower Deflector is a long piece of flexible plastic that extends around the front of the car. I do not have any other cooling items under the car and am wondering if i need both my deflector and what Hawks is calling the "Lower Air Dam" My engine bay gets very hot. Thanks in advance. John

What i currently have

what i don't have. Do I need to add this?

The 3 piece is a later service part to replace the one pictured above.

Thanks Drew. Do you think replacing my original wrap around with the 3 piece would make much of a difference in keeping my engine bay cooler?

As long as you have one or the other you should be fine. The change was made mostly to reduce costs and complexity.

Re: Air Deflector Vs. Air Dam

Did they ever use the 3 piece in production, or is that a service only part?

Re: Air Deflector Vs. Air Dam

The top one is for 85-90 birds without ground FX (base & formula birds) and is just the lower of 4parts.
IIRC, 91-2 have a different 3-5 piece style like the lower and there are 4 versions from 85-90 (2 types) 91-2 (2 types)

Re: Air Deflector Vs. Air Dam

the air dam, I purchased this for my Formula to replace the one piece factory unit.

The middle main piece fits perfect but the other pieces don't fit to well so I just left them off.

my 87 trans am with ground fx uses that same wrap around air dam somehow it disappeared after my son owned it it started overheating at higher speeds say 40 and up- and was fine below that
it creates negative pressure behind it to help draw air through the radiator I was able to locate one years ago no more overheating
