Hi there,

I got a code 15 (coolant temp sensor) on my 1984 L69 HO. Now, all the replacements I can find look totally different from what is build on to my engine. The color of the wiring is correct (black,yellow).
Can I just replace it with a new sensor and modify the connector ?

Yes. In fact, it's highly recommended to do so. There's a real good reason that crappy old "coaxial" style connector is no longer considered worthy of continued existence.

If you check carefully, you'll probably find that there's nothing wrong with the actual sen-sore itself; but rather, the connector is either shorted (parts touching each other), the wires right behind it are bare and are touching, or the connector isn't making good contact with the sen-sore.

Get a new sen-sore that comes with its own new pigtail. Check the box before you leave the store to be sure it's in there. Or, buy it separately. It's readily available. https://www.autozone.com/engine-mana...254/342421_0_0 Doesn't matter which pin of the pigtail goes to which wire of the car's harness. Use electronic solder, heatshrink, and tape to install it, NOT a butt splice or Scotchlock.
