Accel DFI 7 ...should I???

hi I'm currently in the process of building A 383 for my 89 GTA, I have:

Eagle 1 piece rear main crank 3.75 strock
.030 block
TRW Forged Flat top Pistons
I have yet to decide on what cam i will be using
and also what heads i'll be using...MOST LIKELY TRICK FLOW Twisted Wedge
For now i'll be running the Stock intake with a ported plentum and 58MM throttle body, and 24# ADS injectors,
I have the Holley in tank 255GPH fuel pump,
hooker super comp headers
Flowmaster
NO emissions

Would I be better of using the accel system than having a custom burned chip.......or buying stuff to do chips my self???
Any INFo I would greatly apreaciate!!!!!

i would say it all depends on the cam u are wanting to get i have been told that u need to have at least 14 inches of vaccuum for speed density systems to allow the ecm work properly. no matter how much chip burning u do it never helped me. i would say depending on the setup u can safely be within the vaccuum limits up to a little over 220 intake duration.thats why i went with the dfi gen 7 in my 91 z. the cam im using is 230 and 244 duration at .50 and am using a vaccuum canister for my brakes due to the lack of vaccuum.

I think a Accel setup is a complete waste of money. You can tune a stock computer fine with some time. Also there no benefit I can see with using the accel setup. If you want speed density you can switch to a GM speed density ECM, the 7730, for about $70 with all the parts you need.

A friend of mine bought a Gen VII a few weeks ago, and I spend some time trying to help him with it.

The User's manual is written in fine print, by someone that doesn't seem to interested in anything other then flow chart instructions. ie no real explainations to how things work.

It's so configurable for so many applications, as to be really confusing to even set up.

The wiring diagram is borderline illegible. The harness has adjacent wires of the same color combo..

The unit was supposed to be SEFI but the cam synch wiring was left out of the harness.

Use your stock computer, the maf system will run OK.

if your using the stock intake the cam to match will be small so you shouldn't have any problems with stock ecm map stuff. i got away with a SLP 214\224 with a stock chip for ever.

as for the big cam qusetion I've never even seen the programing of stock chips so i don't know. but my old school accel DFI there is a map inrichment table that you can set to 0 at idle up to the point that the vaccuum smooths out to something usable. until then you can have it just look at the TPS sensor for tip in inrichment.

you maybe able to do the same on the oem ecm i don't know. and with a streetable cam you may never need to.

i think willie will know what it takes to tune for a big cam and map.

I have a brand new setup with knock sensor, w/b o2 sensor, distributor with cam signal, and 2 bar map. Cost me $2900, I'll sell it for $2500. Never opened, or used. I decided to go with a carb setup instead.
