Can I use an ECM for an 88 on an 86?

Can I use an ECM for an 88 on an 86?

I have a 1986 trans am. I just put in a new motor 383cid. I still have the stock ECM. I have heard that the ECM in an 86 is slow to learn new settings and overall is not very efficient. My question is can I use an ECM from a newer vehicle like an 88 or 89, and will it make a difference?

86-89 use the same ecm.
That ecm is plenty fast for automotive work. Even the earliest ones are more then fast enough. The only reason for needing faster is for marketing, and keeping the EPA happy.
