Got my ALDL cable.. have a ton of questoins

Please help me out. I have a whole CD full of scanning software and a new aldl cable and im ready to see what the computer is reading! I read one of the warnings and it went a little something like this...

* * *

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >>> C A U T I O N <<< !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! !
! NEVER RUN ENGINE IF SES LIGHT PULSES AND DISPLAY DIAGNOSE CODE !
! ( if A & B pins are short circuit and ignition key is ON ) !
! IT CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR YOUR ECM AND CAN DESTROY YOUR ECM. ( ca 150$ !
! Dont hook up interface while engine is running, or if interface is damaged !
! or broken etc. !
! !
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dose that mean i cant scan the ECM while the car is on? I dont want to see codes, i wana see sensor information!!! what is the deal!! someone help with this? Is it BS?
Also, on the CD i got, i have a lot of software put on here.

Some of the programs that are on the CD are Autotap, WinALDL, Craig Motes, Diacom, tunner cat, datamaster, along with 4-5 other programs. Can someone fill me on what i need to do to get started? It also said that it wont work with 2000, NT or Xp. I understand that, so i have no problem. I plan on getting a used laptop for cheap so i can use it for scanning, and maybe ill use it for school... who knows? Thanks for the help guys.

I recommend using Win95 instead, surely someone has a win95 cd-rom lying around, or an upgrade.

Don't start the car if you've grounded pins a & b.
Hook up your aldl cable before you've started the car.

If you have the cable with an OBDI connector you just plug it in. If you have the cable that gets spliced into the wiring in back of the car's OBDI then you do nothing.
