can custom chip or after market be used in emissions testing

hi....i really dont know if this question has been asked before but the laws in new jersey are strict not like california...so i was wondering is it wise to go to inspection station with a performance chip in? i still have stock chip? i cant remeber what the warning was about from hypertech but i think it had to do with emissions testing about the chip. thanks to who could help!

new msd wires, spark plugs, msd hei distributor cap and rotor, msd gm blaster coil, cataco catalyic converter:hail: :hail:

Probably not a good thing, the aftermarket chip guys tend to bump up the timing and add fuel to give you more kick in the pants (but not likely any significant amount of extra power). It would likely fail emission testing on the NJ treadmill when they tip in the gas to accelerate.

Most aftermarket chips target AE and PE. Shouldn't really have an effect with emissions.

Some "off road" chips might be an issue with testing, as well as being illegal for highway use.

I left my "performance" chip in during testing, but then again my goal was to run 11.60 in the 1/4 and be 100% emissions legal.

I passed with a Hypertech Thermomaster back in the day, treadmill test.

Aftermarket chips from Hypertech, SLP, JET, ADS and a few others only change WOT settings to keep the cars emmissions legal and keep them out of trouble with the EPA. Some tuners like Ed Wright change all settings from idle to WOT.

They do not (and should not!) run IM/40 treadmill testing in WOT because you car rarely sees it (or so the EPA thinks...). It is only a test for average real world conditions.

As long as everything else is in good tune, go ahead and run the Hypertech for emmissions. If it fails, swap the stock one in and go again. You should have at least 3 tries to pass.

My '89 Formula 350 passed that test in Illinois with fuel pressure at 48lbs, lots of supposedly non-emmisions legal mods and it still passed.
