I have a little package that I will e-mail to you concerning this if you want it. By the way, what leads you to believe that you have a problem with the VATS control module? It's located behind the dash just above the a/c control unit and to the side.

PS: Code 53 only indicates that there is a voltage at the ECM ignition input pin that is greater than 17.1 volts for 2 seconds. I would be checking the battery and alternator first. If you had a code 46, then you could worry about the VATS system.

I have the trouble tree from the GM service manual that I can e-mail you. Also, it might not be the module that is the problem anyway. They very seldom if ever go bad, it is usually the ignition lock cylinder or the key. Give me some more specifics on your problem.

the problem came out of nowhere,no warning, just no start, tried all my ing. keys, everything appears fine, turn the key ..nothing, used a code checker, thought it was 53, maybe not, but it for sure pointed me to ck the vats sys.I remove the breather poured a little gas in,(with starter disable relay "jumped")car did start.T he only thing I cant say for sure is what the SECURITY light was doing.ck`d starter, battery, neutrel safty switch, dropped ing.switch, tested out ok,all fuses, but I`ll ck the rest in the moring now that I have access to EVERYTHING I have had this car 11yrs so maybe the pads in the lock asmy. just gave up the ghost? Its just so strange that it gave no warning, today it was fine then tomorrow not`a...

Do this simple little test for me, take a multimeter and set it to OHM's. touch the probes to the contacts on the key and measure the resistance. Next put the key in the ignition lock cylinder in the off position. Disconnect the ignition lock cylinder wire harness connector under the dash. Now take the multimeter, still set at OHM's and try to measure the resistance value of the key through the harness connectors. If you can't, the problem is in the Igniton lock assembly or the key is worn.

Glad to hear that things worked out okay and hey, look at the bright side. You now have a better perspective of where things are under your dash J/K

I had thought about putting a J-79 with A/B in the trunk and a large tank where the back seat was. The idea was going great until somebody mentioned brakes. But you are right, A/P mechaniics aren't exactly in great demand at the moment and when they are, nobody wants to pay them anything. Hopefully, this new company that's moving to the old air base at Myrtle Beach will get things going soon.
BTW, what part of North Cack-a-lackey are you in.
