Hello, this is my first post on this message board and I would like some advise about modified chips for my car. First, I am the original owner of a 1989 GTA with a 5.0 liter engine and 5 speed manual transmission. Last year I obtained a new replacement 5.0 liter long block engine from GM and had a Comp Cam and Headman Hedders installed. The catalytic converter and air pump were removed with larger pipes emptying in to a Walker Super Turbo muffler. I installed a K&N air filter and remover the screens on my Bosch Mass Airflow Sensor. The original TPI was swapped over to the new engine.

To complete my engine upgrades this year I plan either a Holley or BBK twin 58mm throttle body, porting the plenum and possibly Ford Performance Racing 24lb/hr fuel injectors. With all these upgrades I am considering a custom programmed chip and I have been researching different companies. I have held off on the chip untill all the engine modifications are completed. Here is my cost comparison in US dollars. Performance Resource $425, Fast Chips $350, Year One $260, Jet Chips $209.95. PCMFORLESS $150, TBI $50 and I was advised by Hypertech and Superchips that they do not make custom chips for these cars anymore. Most indicated these cost were not refundable; however, they would work with the customer to get it right. This information was obtained from either their web site or by e-mailing the companies. Most of these companies require the engine modifications on a form and some require the computer to be sent to them. Performance Resource indicated they would replace the Cal Pac as well. After researching several message boards, including this one, there is no consensus on the value of these chips. Some people claim the chip increase Hp significantly; other said they notice a slight increase; others said they are worthless; and some indicate they actually harmed engine operations. I could not discern if these comments related to the stage 1 chip or the stage 2 custom programmed chip offered by these companies. I do not have the equipment or technical knowledge to burn my own. I am exploring if anyone in my region of North America burns chips; however, I would perfer to use companies with experience and a reputation in chip modification.

Could I please have some discussion on the following items related to PROM chips and any other relevant comments? What are the engine parameters the custom programmed chips change? Do all companies change the same parameters? What is a Cal Pac? Why would some need the ECM sent to them? Thanks for your comments in advance.
