With the EST connector open the timing should advance once the engine RPM goes over 1,600 to 1,800 RPM. Check this with the timing light while slowly increasing the RPM. If the module is good there will be a sudden jump in timing of about 6 to 10 degrees. If this increase doesn't occur or if it occurs over 2,000 RPM then the module is bad.

Shut the engine off and reconnect the EST connector.

Start the engine and check the timing. Should be at 21 degrees BTDC (or there abouts). If the throttle is suddenly opened the timing advance should first decrease then increase as the RPMs come up.
