upgrading ECM need help..

I would like to upgrade to a 165 ecm from the old 85 year ECM. My question is, I read the tech artical about swaping ecm's, but cant I just buy a painless wiring kit and rewire the engine with the 86-88 harness. Instead of splicing, cutting, adding, subtracting and doing all kinds of things to my existing harness. I mean the 85 and 86 are the same emgines with only a few changes like relays. I just think it would be overall esier and better to just get the new harness to fit the new ECM.
Thanks for helping.
