Newbie here!

I am wanting to be able to check the diagnostic codes in my car. I am not wanting to spend very much money on anything to fancy. Just wanting to be able to simply check diagnostic codes. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Locate the ALDL plug under the drivers dash, and with the key off, insert a paperclip into the far last top, two holes, all the way to the right. Then after the paperclip is in, turn the key to the start position, but dont start the car. The CE light will blink code 12 three times, then any additional stored trouble codes. It will end when you are back to code 12 again. Cant get any less fancier than that.

You had mentioned not wanting to spend money. You can get a "fancy" code reader, but all you are getting is a wire, enclosed in a plastic cartridge, and a trouble code booklet, probably will cost at least $20.00. IMO, its cheaper to just do it with a paperclip, and read the codes, and refer to a Haynes, or Chilton manual to see what they are. Do you know how to read the codes? Its really easy. The code 12 will flash first. This will blink 3 times. (1 blink, pause, 2 blinks, pause). Then lets assume you have a high voltage,(low vacuum) at the MAF. This would result in a 33 trouble code. (3 blinks, pause 3 blinks). It will show each trouble code 3 times. If you have more than 1 trouble code, I would advise you to jot em down. When you are done retrieving the codes, the system will go back to a code 12, which means "No ref. pulses to ECM". HTH.
