Piggyback Fuel controller?

Hey guys quickie question for you. Has anyone ever heard of or used an Apexi Super Airflow converter II controller, also known as a S-AFC II. Here's a link to ther page.

http://www.apexi-usa.com/product_electronics.asp

I know it says it is made for the foriegn cars, but the Mitsubishi is based off of a frequency number just like our cars are. I guess the main question is, will it work with the 1985 computer since it is the first and very unique computer. It doesn't have the normal tuning capabilities as a 1986-89 model.

Seems like it might work, but seeing as how that would only improve your fuel control, and not your spark control, or ALDL data rate, and the fact that it costs $395, I'd think that an ECM swap would be a better way to go.

But, if you really want one, a phone call to the mfr should confirm the frequency ranges that it's compatible with.

thanks for the info and opinion. To swap to the newer 86-89 model would cost me about 1200 dollars so..

???

Junkyard ECM (~$30)
GM MEMCAL ($50)
two relays, if switching to a '165; or a MAP sensor if using a '730
couple of connectors from the same junkyard
possibly a new knock sensor ($35)
a little solder, and a little of your time.

I'd say it's a lot closer to $120 than $1200.

Mike Davis' site covers the details:

From the Apexi website:

"The AFC modifies the air flow meter/ pressure sensor signal voltage going to the factory ECU (Engine Control Unit) to change the amount of fuel injected."

In other words, all it does is change the MAF output signal to fool the computer into richening up the fuel at a certain point along the curve. This is just like the idea of using a potentiometer to modify the CTS signal to make the computer think it is colder outside, thus richening the mixture.

I think it is a band-aid for tuning and should be avoided for our cars since so much information is available to tune the '165 and '730 ECM...

and upgrade your ECM to the '730...Dave_Jones is right
