AKM Cable to serial port problem

AKM Cable to serial port problem
Well this is strange!!!
I have an Andy Mattei/ Steve Ruse cable setup and it works great on my Dell desktop, sniffing an 1227747 as a test mule. I am useing WinAldl or TunerproRT software in Windows XP. Thats great for desktop tweaks, but i need it work on my laptop too, so i can log/moniter going down the road.
The laptop is a Compac presario 2100, running Windows XP also. I have tried reading through Andy's troublshooting guide, and have jumpered the pins 2 and 3 useing HyperTerminal, and do get keyboard echos of whatever I type, on both computers, but neither ALDL software packages on the laptop show any data.
WHAT GIVES?
I havent heard back from AKM through email, so get any help I can get here is greatly appreciated.

FOUND IT!!!
With the help of Andy MAttai, figured out my Laptop didnt have enought rs232 serial port voltage to run the 12 volt power for cable adapter box. But when I added 12 volts to pins 22(neg) and 25(12v positive) of the ALDL side of the box, nothing happened.
After taking the top off the little black "box" and looking inside, there was a diode not installed that normally hooks to pin 25 inside. I got the cable/box from Steve Ruse at WOT electronics, and he uses Andys boards, but dosent put in that aldl 12 volt power supply diode, since most laptops dont need that power.
but...SOME DO!!!!
