the current megasquirt already can control timing for SBC distributors, and for the eDIS coil packs..

The Megasquirt Extra code fully supports the HEI in your TPI and pretty much any other distributor with a little work

MS V3 can control the TBI/TPI distributors without installing all of the Ford nonsense. I have a MS V3 board.

I had my MS installed on a 4.3L TBI V6 that was bone stock fuel/ignition wise. I didn't have to run any additional wiring except the IAT sensor, and running a wire for a relay that was hot in run but not when cranking. The purpose of this is it locks the timing on the HEI module when starting. Read the HEI pages, that's what I did and it worked out just fine.
This should tell you what you need to know about the HEI system and installing it. The only difference between the 7 and 8 pin wiringing colors is that you'll have a black/red wire in your harness you connect to ground.

ED:if you havn't read through enough to figure out how to read the HEI, read a LOT more. custom EFI is inherintly a dangerous business if you don't know what you're doing, a misconfiguration can cause some serious damage. I had my MS configured for high-Z injectors, but TBI injectors are low-Z. Needless to say, $100+ of injectors later and some injector drivers I had a valuable lesson learned about why you don't configure EFI computers at 3AM.
