Question about reading codes

I know this is going to be a dumb question......how do you read the codes?

For example how do you tell you have a code 43.....does the service engine light flash 43 times??

I have one of those cheapy plug in tools to use instead of a jumper wire, and the service engine light will flash like it's supposed to....but I couldn't tell you what I'm looking at code-wise.

It's a 90-92 TPI Speed density system

Thanks again

Re: Question about reading codes

For a 43 - it would flash 4 times, pause and then flash 3 times.
