Installing a Hypertech 11611

for my 1986 305 ta, tpi...

I opened up the ECM per the instructions. I removed a connector-like device that was exposed after removing cover plate. Then I took off the holder and saw three chips, one large one (28 pin) and two smaller 14 pin.

None of the chips seemed removable. I played around trying to remove the chips, but the seemed soldered. None looked exactly like the Hypertech chip, which has 24 pins.

can anyone help?

Thanks!

Off hand I would say that the 24 pin Hyper chip is not the correct one for your vehicle.

You are correct that the 28 pin & two 14 pin chips are soldered in.

When updating the chip in your ECM (1227165) an adaptor is used. This allows the limp mode chips (the two 14 pin chips) to still be connected to the ECM. The adaptor has a socket for the new 28 pin chip. This would have the updated calibration.

With the Hyper chip you have being a 24 pin device, it is not the correct one for your vehicle.

According to the Hypertech website, that is the right chip. If it goes in the same way mine did, it was pretty easy. If you have ever changed the memory in a PC, the chip comes out the same way. There is a tab at each end of the chip that you push down and outward that releases it. The stock chip is still used, the Hypertech chip attaches to it. If you did not get instructions, there website has them.

IIRC, for the 85s it would be. The 86's and above where the later ECMs with the memcals. The earlier ones have the RN chip carriers with teh later ones having teh calibration and knock circuitry hard soldered into the carrier.

Re: Installing a Hypertech 11611

Thanks for the sanity checks... the hypertech chip is labeled 11611, as well as the box. The first curious thing was the lack of static packaging... just a cardboard box... maybe it is esd safe. The directions show a socketed & removable chip... but that is not what I saw in the ECM... so thanks, guys!!

I'm lightly experienced with chips, sockets and soldering and I say that all three chips are not removable, but they might be soldered and could be de-soldered.

Bottom line... wrong chip. I'm having some other issues with the car. I'll try returning the chip... actually, now that I read-up about programming, on this site, I really don't want the chip anymore...!!

I'd rather pay a tuner or get a programmer...!!

I bought mine years ago when I first got my GTA, I am no longer using the Hypertech either.
