Odd Problem

Sorry in advance for the long post.

Alright I bought my first 3rd gen early this summer. The original engine was a 305 TPI Vin F and was swaped out with a 1974 CMJ 350. The EGR valve and smog pump were removed. The A/C was removed too. It also looks like there is no knock sensor either.(haven't found it yet) The 350 has been camed but I have not checked what size it is.after a new battery and alternator was put in I took it for a long test drive. I noticed when I came to a stop light or was slowly pulling into a parking spot it stalled out. I checked the ECM Chip and found that it was the stock one that was for the 305. I bought a jet performance chip for a 87 Iroc-Z with the 350 from a a friend for $50 because his 87 Iroc was wrecked.( This is a tempererary fix until I custom burn my own) The problem with the aftermarket chip is that I have to plug it into the stoc chip. So I have a performance chip for an 87 350 pluged into the stock chip for a 305 This seem to fix the stalling problem. I have noticed now a ticking/clicking noise when I start the car up and while driving. It doesn't do it all the time. Unfortunatly I don't remember if it did this before I put the chip in it. Its also running very rich. It did that when I bought it too. When I hooked up a master tech scantool at work scantool said I have a dtc a code 54 for the fuel pump/fuel pump circuit. This is the only code I have. I looked at the knock sensor and the scantool said, Knock Sensor- No signal. Does this mean That its not working or was never there? Plus will me not having an egr cause and engine ping? can and exhaust leak at the manifold sound like an engine ping because my manifolds have a leak. I can smell exaust coming though my vents.
Any Insight would be great because I am lost.

Here is my scantool data stream
Idle: 550-700
Desired Idle: 600
Idle Air Control: 25
Knock Retard: 0 Degrees
Knock Signal: No
Closed Loop
Block Learn Cell: 0 Cell
Fuel Intregrator: 156-164
Block Learn: 160
Spark Advance 14 Degrees
Oxygen Sensor: 285mv-750MV- The scantool may not be fast enough to get the full swing of the oxygen sensor.
Injector Pulse Width: 2.3-2.4 msec
Throttle Pos: 0.62 V
Maf: 5.2 g/s
Airflow: 5 g/s
Coolant: 223 Degrees
Mat/Iat: 149-153 Degrees

Dtc: Code 54-Fuel pump/Fuel pump circuit

Re: Odd Problem

I wish I was more familiar with the details of TPI computers, however I might be able to help. First of all, I'm pretty sure there should be a signal for the knock sensor, it may be missing if you cannot find it. A cam that is mismatched to the TPI setup could easily cause a rich condition, especially since it hasn't been tuned yet.

I see you are in Ada, I'm in Novi, NW suburb of Detroit, if you want to see if putting a stock chip in (for an L98) helps, we can try, if only to replace the 305 chip. I don't know that I can part with it permenantly, as the motor, at least, is going to a friend. I'll have to ask if he wants the computer. Not likely though, as the harness is now hacked up.

Otherwise does it drive fine?? And yes, manifold leaks definatly make a ticking noise.

Re: Odd Problem

Alright I messed up my blm readings. 160 is a lean condition, so the engine is dumping fuel in, hence why my exhaust smells bad. I think my problem is my cat is clogged up because I have no emission controls. There is no blue smoke at all from the exhaust. I also found out that the chip is not the problem. My ecm is usuing the stock chip I.D and the performance chip to run the car.

Re: Odd Problem

Update- Fixed my code 54 problem, New fuel pump relay. I have no trouble codes now. Car still runs like crap though. I have discovered a small fuel leak/seapege on the steal lines at the fuel tank. Could my timming be off really bad. Whats the timing suposed to be with the spark control module still pluged in?. My timing with the electronic spark control module still plugged in was 0-4 degrees. My car also idles poorly, 500-750 rpm in park warmed up and at operating temp. In drive 500-750 too. I also know my exhaust manifolds are leaking at least the drivers side is since I am missing a manifold bolt and can hear the clicking sound from the manifold. I have not scanned my car since putting in the new fuel pump relay though. I also noticed that you can see a little bluish smoke from the tailpipes even when the car is warmed up.

There is a big problem right there. The oxygen sensor is on the driver's side manifold. The extra oxygen being let in at the leaky manifold is goofing up what the computer is seeing, thus over fueling your car.

FIX THAT LEAK!!!! after that is done, see what, if any problems remain. Hopfully that will take care of the smoke, if not, you may have a pvc/oil ring/bad valve seal problem.

I always checked the timing with the advance disconnected, I had it set around 8-10*. See where yours is when disconnected, though 0-4* sounds very low.
Hope some of this helps.

Re: Odd Problem

Yeah I am going to check my base timing tonight. My car used to stall at very low speeds or at a stop light before. The superchip I put in must have advanced the timing just enough to keep it from stalling. And since my timing with the computer still controling the ignition only went up to 4 degrees I am almost certian that whover droped this engine in did not set the timing right. I will get back with my results as soon as I can
