Question about aftermarket prom's

Ive got a stock 305 and was wondering if the " stage 1" chips I see for sale on ebay and the like for around $40-$50 are what I need. I still want to run it on regular gas and really want to get rid of that speed limit I just didnt know if those chips were junk or not and if they actually did anything they say they can
