electronic advance timing

I am curious as to how that is controlled. IF I have a improper working chip will the computer not advance timing? What could happen if a chip is bad? Im kind of stuck right now and im wondering what are some issues with bad chips

Re: electronic advance timing

If something goes wrong with the prom/memcal the ECM will go into limp mode, which will cause the SES light to stay on. Or, if there's a bad connection at the memcal socket (cracked solder joint, etc), the SES light may flicker randomly, I had that problem. I'm not sure if the ECM still advances timing in limp mode, but I think it does. I think I remember reading that in limp mode the fans stay on too. Have you checked with a timing light to see if the timing is advancing?
