ECM Trouble code problem

Hey guys,

I have an 88 tbi 305 and i am trying to find out why the service engine soon light comes on and the car still works fine. I have used the paper clip and the service engine soon light flashes once than stays on when i have "A" and "B" jumped. When i drive, the car seems to run ok, however the SES light comes on and off regularly. I have checked other posts and could not find the answer. Does this mean my ECM could be bad or is there a way to find that out brfore paying $100 for a new one?

The car has been modified quite a bit, open air, headers with duals, and a Jet chip to name a few.
