ECM CHIPS
i have an 85 IROC that i am having some drivability issues with.
after checking all the sensors and verifying that they are working and in range, i believe my trouble is with the ECM, more specifically, the chip thats in it.
the engine i have is a 350 with the tpi from the original 305.
i believe it has larger injectors to go with the larger displacement, but i cannot be sure. i didnt build the engine and have no details of what lays inside.
anyway, i have been looking for a custom chip and have hit a road block.
350s werent put into camaros until 87, but in 86 they switched to a new computer.
obviously i cant use a 305 chip because that would give me even more problems.
can i use an 87 chip in a 85 computer and be fine or do i have to either have a custom chip burned or switch ecm's
thanks

) Anyway, I think you can get a chip out of an '85 Corvette. It would be a 350 chip and the '85 Vette used the same computer as the Camaro for that year. ...But, if you are getting a custom chip, what difference does it make? Then again, in my own searching for custom '85 chips, I have found that no one seems to do them (for cheap anyway), it is always '86&up... Hence, my consideration of the '85 Vette chip...TPIS does '85s, but they want a decent chunk of change...
HyperTech (which can be obtained from TPIparts) also offers chips for '85s, but they are fairly expensive too...
To answer your other questions. The chips have to correspond to the computer they are installed in. Not so much the chip, but the programming on it. However, the chips in '85 were actually physically different than the ones from later years. So, no you cannot use an '87 chip in an '85 computer. Also switching ECM's is not really straight forward either, as the '85 has a different pinout for the harness connectors than the later years...

Re: ECM CHIPS
hows this look
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
i figure a 49 state chip will be more "powerful" than a 50 state chip, and since i dont have a stock motor, this might be a better route.
btw, i have no clue what is in the motor.

Re: ECM CHIPS
I dunno, you could have problems if your injectors are not equivalent to what was stock on an '85 Corvette...

Re: ECM CHIPS
Sorry for the delayed response, didn't get a notification 'till just a while ago. Anyway, the injectors will have a number on them somewhere. It will be pretty small, you'll have to get pretty close to read it. If you can get that number, post it up and I will see if I can help you find out what injectors you have.

Re: ECM CHIPS
Here's a picture (from fiveomotorsport.com):

Probably Ford injectors given the source, but they look very similar to the ones on my Camaro, so anyway the part number is there on that little flat area just above the silver colored part. Your injectors probably aren't silver like that, but it gives a general idea of where to look. You shouldn't have to remove the injector to see this number.

Re: ECM CHIPS
All the L98 TPI 5.7 injectors were 22#, and the LT1 was 24# from what I've always seen.
I've used 19# Ford SVO (Bosch) injectors in my 5.0 TPI 40 Chevy for about 8 years now with no problem at all. No changes to ecm and it runs great and I got 26.2 mpg last 1300 mile round trip to Daytona on the road part and 17 mpg in town part.
The 85 5.0 TPI I started with had Multitec injectors, but not sure about 5.7.
This link might help.

There's a list of part number, mfg, and rating in the intake section.
