Marine stuff...Open to a lot of performance

This could be simple and short. I am in the process of modding a stock 4.3 volvo Gi that has std tbi. The good part is the motor has the right vortec heads and a 2" tb bore sitting atop of a 4 bl intake..Those are all stock..what has been modified is the cam and valve train. the cam is a little hot but will work

I really have no ideal if this can be done, but i am intrested in pursing it a little farther. Can i do this..probably not but i would be open to paying for something like this if it is reasonalbe.

Are you up for DIY tuning?

First thing you need to do is to find out what ECM is being used. A picture along with the numbers from it will help.

Here is the issue. If that ecm is burned and does not work Volvo get a thousand for a new one. I believe its closed loop ..no sensor in the exhasut.. Can i go to the junk yard and find one that will work and be modded?

I can tell you know i do not know how to program a ecm...but id pay for one that would work..With in reason of course

That is a MEFI ECM (Marine Electronic Fuel Injection). Won't find one in the junk yard unless it is a boat yard. Not sure which series it is as they are now MEFI 1 through MEFI 4.

You are correct about it not using an O2 sensor. This makes it an open loop system (open as in no feed back).

There are some MEFI tuning programs available but they are pricey. A 'net search on MEFi will bring some up. Arizona Speed & Marine was one of the first to be licensed by GM for tuning. The MEFI controller was also used on the GM provided RamJet crate engines.

Could switch to an underhood ECM such as the 1227727 and the TPI code ($8D). Lots of support and inexpensive tuning equipment is available.

Tuning package is a little expensive, but have you tried to find a 7730 or 7727 lately and do the harness modifications to make it work. Let me tell you the AUJP Memcal goes for over $100 USED if you can find one. You would want to mount either of these automotive ECMs in a SEALED housing using a sealed connector for the wires to run through. It would be an extensive little project. Then add in the fact you would need a way to datalog it and burn your chips. A chip adapter for the memcal will all cost you some $$$. I think the MEFI ECM if it works would be my choice.

It is a MEFI-3, ive done a bit of looking around...it seems to be a very basic ecm. I wonder if i would need to reprgram it. Maybe just a adjustable fuel regulator. I going to chase this in another thread . Any suggestions would be kewl..
