'85 ECM swap out

Hey guys, I have an 85 iroc TPI equipped with the stock(slow baud) ECM that is apparently a real pain in the a** to tune and burn chips for. My plan so far is to repin and swap my ECM for a faster baud 86-89 ECM, then to send it out and get a flash system installed so I can tune on the fly without messing with chips(I think flash should pay for itself in the long run).

So I read alot of tutorials and information regarding how ECMs work and this great guide in the tech section: http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap/

Now my question is, do i HAVE to use ECM # 1227165 for the swap? Is that the ONLY ecm I should use for the swap, or is it possible to use ones from the V6 thirdgens, or say a V8 TBI Caprice? From what I gather I should stick to a donor ECM from a V8 TPI thirdgen with MAF from 86-89. But has anyone successful used any other types of computers instead of 1227165 for the swap?

I ask this question because I actually have a #1227302 ECM lying around from the junkyard, it was out of a V6 trans am and I wondered if this was usable. Hopefully you can set me straight and shed light on this subject for me, thanks guys!

Re: '85 ECM swap out

you can use any 1227165 ecm, but you need to get a memcal from 86-89 305 or 350 TPI (camaro or firebird)
