NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

bitchin news! A guy named Marc has designed an adapter board for directly connecting a megasquirtII to our factory wiring harness. no more splicing wires, custom wire harnesses, testing connections, etc. has tcc circuit integrated, directs pin 30 to the fan trigger for fan control, has ignition power ckt built in, knock circuit, etc. anybody interested in it? it requires a little soldering and a donor ecm case. the beauty of it is it looks like you have a factory ecm. i'm going to try to setup a little timer circuit to make my check engine light come on for a few seconds on startup so it looks right.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

I cut the wire off my old narrow band and spliced that wire/connector right onto my wideband output wire. works slick and keeps the factory wires unhacked. I have an innovative LC-1 myself.

do not have to rewire anything in the ignition. I didn't do ANYTHING to mine... my ignition is all factory with no modifications.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

I havn't gotten his permission to post his contact info on here yet but I will PM anyone the information until then (he is selling them now).

Price for the bare board is the same as the TBI adapter board at US$35 ea. In addition you need to supply a donor ECM - it can be a '747 TBI ECM - you just use the case and the connector from the donor which is the same as the '165. The rest of the parts come from digikey and cost about $15. The assembly instructions are identical to the TBI adapter found on DIYautotune.

He's already talking to the folks at DIYautotune to have it sold on their site.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

ok, but as i'm from europe not usa i preffer to get full kit ready to solder (or allready soldered and tested) as geting parts is hard for me and very expensive so i would rather pay to get one p&p, just reday to put my MSII into it.

best regards

damn.. i thought there would be more excitement about this... its freakin awesome in my book. for under 400 you can have a kick *** aftermarket ecu with no wiring or modification of the stock harness. plug this puppy in and no more burning chips... and you get realtime tuning and all sorts of customization possible.

Wow man! That is really impressive. Makes my MS install look like a turd in comparison.

Then again, mine was not a TPI to begin with.

What a sweet product. If I ever get another car, i'll be sure to buy one!

I'll also post it up on my forum.

Oh, and WAYsl, this is a better option by far then what we were discussing.

Nice I have been thinking about the 411 / OBD-II swap but I havent looked into the advantages of MS vs 411.

Any opinions?

this is awesome, i want to megasquirt my IROC sooooo bad... it really doesn't cost that much more than getting all the stuff to burn proms, but its sooo much easier to just plug in and flash it. i'll store this info away for the 383 build

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

it does knock sensing... the circuit is built on the adapter board to bring the knock signal into pin pin 6.

i will probably be recording some video this weekend of the board, setup, etc.

anything in particular you guys want to see pictures of or have questions on?

Excellent. Those guys have a well-deserved reputation of being the best. I'm glad such a reputable place will carry the board

That's awesome about the knock sensing. That makes it a lot easier. I had to drill a hole to pass in my knock sensing signal line...
My proto area is getting full!

To all who are planning to use the hall input with the stock ignition and build your own, there is an incorrect resistor value that gives a little bit of trouble when it gets hot out and the module voltage drifts. I'm not sure if the value has been fixed in the kits, it probably has. Check it out here.

I just checked it out , and the value is fixed in the manual after I made that thread. It's pretty cool to see something I noticed be implemented

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

There might be an opportunity for some creative folks to build and sell completed boards...

The assembly instructions are identical to the TBI board - check DIYautotune.com under adapter boards.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

Will this work with the harness from a 730 car? I don't want to run a whole new harness from another car so if it doesn't I might as well just buy their universal harness so that I don't have a nasty looking old harness running everywhere.

I already have the money sat aside for this so I am ready to buy NOW if possible. I'm getting anxious.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

Unfortenately the 7730 is a newer version of GM ECM than the '165 so this adapter board won't work the pinout is different. The 7730 ECM has a number of features like VSS interface that MS does not currently support. What could be done - a bit more work but cleaner would be to repin the needed inputs & outputs from the '730 harness connector into a '165 connector (easily found in a 88-92 GM TBI truck - its the same connectors). This way the VSS, speedo output and cruise outputs will still function from the '730 ECM and you won't lose thse signals, then use the adapter board to plug in your MS. You might have to splice the ign. +12 and ground wires though.

The '7730 adapter is the next in line to get done but its at least a 6 months out as the VSS function needs to be implmented.

Thanks for asking.

'86 to '88 TPI use the '165 ECM and the '89 to '92 use the '7730 ECM totally different electrical connections.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

1990 was the first year for the 730 in a Thirdgen. 165 was used in 89.

That is unless the Schucks website is wrong, but I don't believe it is:

http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductD...pe=248&PTSet=A

Check the years it fits.

but what does it all mean basil? i'm interested when ya get the 7730 lined out, what would be really kick *** is if ya could do a 7730 swap from a 165 without harness change.. if it's not impossible it would be awsome!

When the adapter gets done for the '7730 harness it will be to plug MS the stock 7730 harness complete with speedo and cruise control support.

with megasquirt you can throw away MAF as MSII has built-in MAP sensor

If you every did want to revert to a MAF MSII supports Ford type MAF sensors.

The adapter boards are well under way.. stay tuned to DIYAutotune's web page for availability.

A couple of questions...

1) is the '7148 the same physical size and shape as the '165/747 ecms?

2) do you have the harness connector pin out for it? If you do email it or a link to me.

If the footprint is identical to the '165/747 ECM's and the pin out is close to the '165 this could be a quick one to do. I'd need a beta tester that has a good amount of tuning/troubleshooting experience as I don't have a turbo V6 to go try it on.

PM me for email addy.

Are you still thinking its going to be around 6 months or so on the 7730 adapter? I am assuming it is, but I am wishing for some good news...

Most likely yes .. unless you can write embedded "C" code... with our short summer here its hard to get programming done "after hours" - the basic board is not the hold up. The VSS interface needs an extra processor to convert the VSS signal into a speedo and cruise control signal. The hardware to do this could be done soon but these 2 outputs would not function until the code got written.

Re: NEW adapter board for megasquirtII to 86-88 tpi cars

I'll get it tomorrow

I'll export the table so you can just reimport it. I'm afraid i'm running quite a few code versions behind so my .msq won't really do you any good !
