performance chip or shift kit

what would make my 92 camaro rs 305 faster a chip or a shift kit and how much of a difference would each one make or how much of a difference would both make?

Re: performance chip or shift kit

This is kinda a hard thing to really tell you. The chip will give you hp while the shift kit will not but the shift kit can cut down on time. I my self wouldn't get a chip, i would burn my own chip. one of the greatest things on TGO is are DIY PROM board. Now you can get cookie cutter chips like venom but you can see (here: Venom 400 Chip Dyno results in here!) that you get maybe 15hp out of them for $300. Not really the best bang for the buck. For $20 more you could get the AutoProm Package for everything you would need to start tuning your car. Prom burning would let you do way more then venoms chip plus turning your car as you add stuff to your engine.

Now shift kits are pretty cool. I got a transgo Sir for $60 and it really gives you a nice but fast shift. Now I wouldn't go with the B&M that seems to be popular, there are horror stories about transmission breaking with them. Transgo is really looked at as the best shifter kit for are cars on here.

Truthfully out of those two I would pick the shifter kit. Its not going to give you power but a faster shift means no lag to slow you down but the Prom tuning would help alot more then a cookie cutter chip. I guess it up to how much work are you willing to do on your car.

Billet servo and a good stall. And you can do both of them yourself. I did this set up on a 92 350 car and picked up .4 and 2mph. It was a 2800 stall.

Re: performance chip or shift kit

Any pre-programmed off the shelf chip is a total waste of money.

Shift kit just makes tranny shift harder, not faster.

Rear gears will get you off the line faster - best bang for the buck in the feel of the car.

You either need to look into LT1 cam, better intake, better exhaust, or look into a 350 swap. Beyond a LT1 cam, intake and exhaust, any further mods will require CUSTOM chip tuning, and not worth the effort for the small gains you might see out of the 305 compared to immediate gains you'll have from a 350 IMO.

Look into swapping in a 350 block/heads & keeping your TBI - all you need is motor/heads, 350 TBI chip from a Caprice or truck, 350 injectors for your TBI, and a 350 knock sensor.

Re: performance chip or shift kit

I agree with the rear gears. best bang for the buck. Find a v6 stick shift car should have 3.42 rear end in it.

Other than that the cam and heads are major players in holding the 305's down.

But for cheap. Bump up the timing. Change the air cleaner. make sure your tuneup is all good. dont waste $$$ on performance coil's/distributors.

Re: performance chip or shift kit

The shift kit is the better idea.

Start your performance modifications with a free-flowing exhaust.
