How to identify a 165 ecm harness?

OK, here is my issue. My car was a tbi car converted to a tpi car. I have a gray wire in pin M on my aldl connector and an orange wire in pin E. Here is my aldl pinout:

a-blk/whte stripe
b-whte/blk stripe
c-brown solid
d-empty
e-orange solid
f-tan/blk stripe
g-empty
h-empty
j-empty
k-purple solid
l-empty
m-tan solid

SO, i also have a vss buffer box that appears to be wired up also, although i have not verified this. Torque converter does work though. My issue was not being able to connect with a two transister cable via my laptop. How can identify what harness was used? Do i still have the TBI harness in there? I do have a 7730 ecm and correct prom. I did verify that. The car runs good. I ask all of this cause the only cars appearing to have a brown wire on ALDL pin C are the 165 ecm cars (89' and lower).

They may not have swapped out the ALDL connector as it is part of the I/P wiring harness. Pin E is used for serial data in a TBI set up. Pin M is used in the TPI set up.

A 165 ECM ALDL has pins E & M tied together and on to the ECM.

On a '92 TBI pin C goes to the port AIR solenoid.

Ok,yet my issue is the my car has the aldl wiring colors for a tpi car. The tbi car has a different wire scheme at the aldl connector than the tpi. Mine is wired like the tpi way. I would like to know how i can identify what harness is being used? Do i check the C207?

Rbob, can you at least PLEASE tell me what the solid tan wire on pin M is for? I have an orange wire on Pin E.

As far as I know pin M is reserved for 8192 baud ALDL data. Such as used in the '7730 ECM.

TBI is 160 baud with pin E being used.

'7165 ECMs are both 160 & 8192 baud, so both pins are wired together then go on to the ECM serial data I/O.

The two-transistor cables don't always work. I've had them where one worked on one laptop but not another laptop.

Re: How to identify a 165 ecm harness?

Thanks Rbob, it looks like the aldl is wired like a tpi car. It is just that damn tan wire going to pin M that has me stumped? someone else said it was +5 volts? Does that sound correct? The reason i am so concerned is because i am afraid to connect this new aldl cable and mess up the cable. Do you think i should just disconnect the tan wire in pin M and put the orange wire there instead? leaving pin E empty? as far as i know aldl cables only need a single data wire and a ground right?

I would ring out the wires between the ECM and ALDL connector. Pin A8 is the serial data at the ECM. Hook to it and see which one at the ALDL it is connected to. Move that wire to pin M.
