Precautions When Changing PROM

Are there any precautions I should take when changing out a PROM? I will obviously disconnect the ECM from the harness but are there static discharge issues or anything else I should be concerned about?

Thanks

Larry

Disconnect your battery and disconnect the ecm. Esd can cause ecm and eprom damage so a ground strap is a good idea but most people don't use them.

Honestly, all I make sure of is that the engine is off.

I only disconnect the ECM sometimes to clear any BLM history that might be stored.

Best preactice is as suggested to disconnect the battery first, but I haven't found it necessary in the couple of decades I've been playing with EFI. *shrug*

Use an anti static bag to carry the prom to your car. Make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable and touch the body of the car with your hand before you touch the chip to install it.

I have swapped eproms 100+ times with never an issue. All I did was ign off.

ignition off and you're good to go. if you really feel like static will be an issue(worse in some climates than others), then hold a hand on a grounded surface before you start handling anything sensitive. if that doesn't discharge you, not much will.

for those of us with underhood ECMs, this is a lot easier to remember/do.

Mechanic once told me to always wear some rubber gloves because even touching the carpet can cause static....
