ECM, EST and a codes, codes, help

I have an 89 RS 305 TBI, 110K mi. I have been pulling the codes frequently trying to get an idea if any were sporadic. I get an intermittent 32 baro sensor, however there is always a code 42 and 53.

The Hayne's manual makes no reference to a 53 in the TBI section, but does in the TPI and MPFI revisions in the back of the book, there the code is for a contact terminal over voltage at B2 (fuel pump signal) Incidentally, I noticed that the fuel pump is loud. ???

This is my first Camaro, and i've had it for about two weeks. Not sure yet as to what is a normal sound. It polished up very well, interior is serviceable, *lots of new parts* however, the engine smokes when fired up in the morning, but clears quickly with engine temp, and has rear seal leak (minor). The PCV filter is oily.

The exhaust smells very rich and that's where the bulk of the problems are. The previous owner ran a new wire from the ECM (white wire) to some unknown point beyond the distributor. The wire was routed in the factory harness, so it is difficult to tell where it terminates. I clear the codes when I get a new lead from the message boards here, but the codes 42 and 53 are persistent. I am thinking of changing out the Ign Ctrl Mod, then making an food offering to the Camaro *** for success. Any info that you can provide would be of great help.

The car is fun, my first V-8, but I think it has more potential if I can rectify the rich exhaust and the constant codes.

Thanks to this site, and you, the members and guests, have helped me bring this $1500 Camaro back to life. People never, ever pulled up to me at a light and want to race when I drove the 4 door Civic.

Thanks in advance

The famous code 42 is the biggest nightmare in the GM world. The Snap-On scanner reads "possible causes are ecm, ignition module, wiring harness connections and rf interference [poss.cross-fire in secondary ignition wires]" aaaaaaah, thanks for narrowing it down so much.
Really, your best bet, rather than just guessing is to have a shop look at it,look for someone who's specialty is computerized engine controls,or they will just guess at it too.
I have been repairing cars at a 3 bay shop for 20+ years, and of all the codes a car can have,42 is the biggest problem.

D144John..
Thanks for the tip, There's a guy here in town who'll computer scan for $25.00.

I traced the wire the previous owner installed, it extends from the computer through to the fender well, where it is re-connected to the original wire en route to the ignition module. The manual said that this white wire is ETS. From what you say, it sounds like an attempt to fix this problem of mine has been done before.

What do you think about the code 53? Also, do you think that my code 32 (baro?) could play a role in the rich running of the car?

Thanks for the help.
