OBD 1 Scanner Recomendations

Greetings, I have recently acquired a 1987 Firebird Trans Am GTA with the 5.7 Liter/700R4. I have the GM Service Manual for the car and while troubleshooting a hard start and fuel vapor smells I noted that the manual references to use of the "SCAN" tool to look at things like the Coolant Temp Sensor readings etc...

Reading through several of the threads here in 3rdGen I can not seem to find a hard reference or recommendation for a preferred OBD 1 scanner tool. I have seen some references to a Snap-On MT2500 and have found several available on eBay but I am not confident if this unit works for my 87 GM F-Body and what other attachments I may need to make the unit usable.

I am not planning to delve into programming, I just need a proper diagnostic tool for my OBD 1 cars.

Suggestions? Recommendations?

Thanks for the help,

Mt2500 and otc pathfinder for hand held devices.
moates.net has the xtreme aldl to see data with tunerpro rt and winaldl.
the gas smell I’d look at tank vent next to fuel filter and charcoal canister.
or the engine could be getting flooded out, leaking injectors or fuel pressure regulator tear.

You could try finding a GM Tech 1 Scanner. They are great for troubleshooting. A friend of mine gave me his.

Tech 1 is great but usually more expensive and harder to come by. Or Atleast it has been in the past.

For under a $100 it works great and if you have an old droid phone you just have to pay for the ALDL droid app once and good to go BT streaming live data. This option worked well for me as we no longer have a laptop but this is also compatible with Tunerpro and others listed in the link.
