PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

I am swapping a 350 tpi from a 91 Corvette into my 88 Firebird that currently has a 305 tpi, 700r4 auto and no vats. What would be the stock PROM chip number that I am looking for for the 350 tpi swap?

I have read in my research that having a chip with or without VATS makes a difference, is this true? I have also read that the the PROMs are specific to certain rear end gear ratios, is this true as well?

As an alternative I was thinking of just getting the Hypertech Street Runner Chip, does anybody have an experience with this as a stock replacement? ( the motor will be stock with only slightly bumped up cam)

Thanks!

Re: PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

This is the do it yourself reprogramming section. You can reprogram the memcal, get a used one , have it reprogramed but I wouldn't waste your funds on a hypertech. Between years tpi maf in f and y bodies the ac pressure switch came in normally open and normaly closed configurations. Most likely yours is n/o. If you instal a vette memcal nc swich it will command your fans on unless you ground or change the ac pressure switch. As far as the cam tuning would depend on the grind if it's a comp cam/crane ect intended to swap no mods needed for the ECM. Any real changes over stock should be tuned live or datalog tuned through mail order.

Re: PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

Moved from DIY...

ARAP is a popular BIN for the Corvette engines, however it does have VATs enabled. That will prevent the engine from starting. It is an '89 BCC for the '7165 MAF ECM.

Re: PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

Thanks for getting me in the right section RBob.

Basically as this is a budget build and I have absolutely no knowledge of PROMS I am looking for a plug and play situation.

My plan was to either find a stock PROM on ebay or go with a Hypertech. The motor block is out of a 91 vette and the intake manifold, plenum and runners will be all coming from my current 88 305 tpi setup (changing injectors to 22 lb of course). I will be putting shorty headers on the motor.

With these facts should I be searching for a stock and/or Hypertech PROM for a 91 vette or for and 88 Firebird/Camaro with the 350 TPI. My guess was I should either get an 88 350 TPI Prom w/out VATS or get the Hypertech from Summit for an 88 350 TPI Firebird.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge, any help is appreciated.

The 90-91 corvette is speed density, the memcal will not work in you tpi maf 1227165 ECM. Rbob advised the correct code arap, or arar if you stick with maf.

Re: PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

Hello, I know this is an old thread but I’m doing almost the exact same swap in my 88GTA but I’m using a 90 L98. What did you end up doing? Thank you for any advice you give.

Re: PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

Is the 90 l98 from a c4 ? If cast iron heads from a f body here’s the list of bcc. Note some late birds had vats . If you have vats already no issue using a vats enabled memcal. You can always upgrade to $6e 89 tune or a custom tune .

Re: PROM for 88 350 TPI Build

Yes correct, C4 L98 Aluminum heads. So far I know I need to do a knock sensor, injectors, ESC module and the prom. So I should be good to fire and run the car if I find an 88 350 TPI ECM? Sorry if my questions are confusing I’m coming from 4th gens so this is all new to me.
