To change to aftermarket or not?

So I have a 91 tbi rs auto. I'm trying to figure out what to do with my ecu eventually I plan on upgrading the engine, but atm it has issues that a tune would solve. Egr is screwed along with timing being wocky and not having a way to see what's going on. I'd like to use the shitty stock ecu, but the prom isn't 28 pin and when I tried to use the adaptor it wouldn't work (likely my fault). That being said if anyone knows where I could find the software to use my stock ecu I'd try it again, but a part of me is like just get a megasquirt or holley kit and be done with it! Heck I even thought about going to a carb, but that presents its own issues. Like lock up torque converter, kick down and the engine timing. I'm kind of at a lose anyone I'm looking for advise.

There is a solder in conversion adapter to go from 24 to 28 pin at

$61 mask software at tunercat or tunerpro.

I have that and the booster. Idk if I used that mask or not. Fyi I did tune my son's 88 tpi with the Australian tune I don't remember what the tune is called, but it was well worth the move over to that tune! I'll take a look at the mask I used later today.
