Different types of ECM

I am considering swapping a TPI from an 85 F-body to my 86 T/A. I have heard that the 85 unit is not a good one, I should find me an 87-89 ECM.

1) Is it the same unit from 87-89?

2) What is the number of that ECM?

3) Why is the 85 ECM so bad?

Thanks in advange,

Nonni

The 85 was a rather crude system. It was the first year, not that it''s really bad, just that it's dated. Also the refresh rate for scanning is slow.

For the work involved, I'd say use the 90-92 ecm and switch to the MAP system. That's a 1227730. Long term you'll be happier with it. MAF sensor $150 MAP $50, one bad MAF pays for the swap.

I thought that it would be better to use MAF system on my car since it is an 86 T/A and I am working on an old 350. What will I gain if I use Speed density system?

Better self diagnostics.
Faster ALDL stream.
Better data logging if you get to that stage.
A full generation newer of ecm design (almost 10 years newer).
Lots easier to program.
Easier to find replacements.
Like I said the MAP sensor is 50 vs $150 for your's, and I would be surprised to see the MAFs becoming harder to even find.
