Really need some expert help on this one!

Okay here goes, I am trying to find out what EPROM I had in my car. There was a big stuff up when my car was converted to MAP from MAF. They did not change the ECM,Knock Sensor, Memcal. All they did was rechip the memcal.

Well after I bought the car I noticed bad gas mileage so I changed the ECM,Knock sensor and put in correct memcal. Now the car is great.

I am just getting into EPROM programming and for curiosity I wanted to have a look at the EPROM they redone and put in my car after the conversion. I was not sure what EPROM they used so I presumed it was a 27C128 and read it like that on the programmer. I then had unelievable values everywhere and they were that bad that I did not believe them. So I then read the chip as a 27C256 thinking they did use the right EPROM for the MAP system.

I read that chip and there was information after the HEX address of 3FFF so that leads me to believe that the EPROM is a 27C256 (32kb) is that correct to assume?? I mean if it was a 16kb chip then there would have not been and values after the address 3FFF right?

Okay I wanted to open up the BIN file in TunerCat and I got the following error

The file indicated that the $5D ECM definition file should be used

I had a look on TunerCats website and the $5D definition file is for 88 Australian Holden ECM type 1227808.

I do live in Australia so it is all making sense that they did not have a chev file or know what to do so they used a Holden BIN that ran on MAP and just copied it over and then put in my car.

Now what I want to know doing such a thing how did the car run at all? Was it in limp mode all the time for 5yrs before I bought the car?? The car had a new engine put in shortly after this conversion to be exact it was a month. The engine has only about 20K miles on it and it seems to be fouling 2 cylinders, I was wondering could it be caused by the car running in Limp mode all the time? What are the consequences of running an improper BIN in a car like mentioned above?

I want to write a letter off to the people who done the chip and tell them they did a great job in screwing up.

Give me some opinions cause I have had it with these lousy mechanics that can't do **** right!

Sorry for being so long but tried to explain everything as good as possible.

Mike

I really can't help with the MAP stuff but you may want to look at the post on this board about converting MAF to MAP by just rewiring the MAF harness. Almost sounds like thats what happened in reverse. Unfortunately it can be a real mystery when it comes time to figure out what someone else has done to your car. But since you have fixed what should have been done in the first place... just live with it and start tunning.

The MAP conversionis complete and working fine.

The only thing I was really asking was what can happen if the car is running in LIMP mode all the time. Is it bad for the engine??

I want to write a letter to the mob who burnt the chip and abuse the crap out of them cause of what they did.

First what you seem to have is a 1227165 MAF conversion to 1227808 MAP. The 808 is the aussie version of the 165.

From Ludis's site...
http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/p4xref.html#1227808
1227808
Schematic

Description: 1227165 w/o 8192 baud ALDL
Application: Australian
MEMCAL IDs: ASBX, …
EPROM type: 27C128

So either chip size maybe in your MEMCAL. I am running a 16K file in a 27C256 using $4000-$7FFF, and from what I have seen just checking about the $5D code is 16K, so theses no way your ECM is running off a 32K bin. The only way a 16K bin will work in a 32K eprom is to burn it to the upper half of the EPROM ($4000-$7FFF). I'm sure the car wasn't running in Limp home mode for 5 years. hope this helps. cheers, Bob

It really depends on what is causing the SES code. One thing for sure, IT'S NOT RIGHT. Get it fixed FAST.
